Mike Dorsey

My paintings are a search for reverie. My subjects can range across many things. But, I hope all of them carry a sense of this quality of reverie. By that I mean, those moments when we are stopped by something that lets our daily cares fall away and one's spirit sink into a pleasant thoughtful moment. I live near the Great Marsh of the north coast of Massachusetts. These are wide open fens. For decades lately, I’ve pulled on my high boots and walked the marshlands with their ancient drumlin islands left by the receding glaciers. It’s a world alive: rocky islands, winding tidal rivers, and people timelessly digging or fishing for food. Big sky and low rays at sunset make for long, long shadows across flat lands and everywhere is the cacophony of living things. It is easy to fall into reverie in these marshes. Many of my painting try to capture these fulfilling moments.

It just seems our lives are such a blur of activity that reverie is almost impossible, work, device screens, deadlines and obligations. Most times a chance for reverie is lost with its healing rejuvenation. My hope is that my images recapture those moments for the viewer and when viewed the unique marks that created the whole image will help daily cares drop away.
