"A Beautiful Day, the Great Marsh", is a painting of an old beloved subject.
I spend almost every day hiking on the great marsh near my home in Ipswich, Massachusetts. I don't have one photo of these areas and the ancient islands on them. I have thousands of images from decades of
walks and plien air sessions and the mental camera all artist have in
their heads.
When I began this painting a year ago, the composition was
very different.
As with most of my paintings, I get to a point and put them aside. A painting can go through numerous stages. This one did, for months. Finally, I had a memory of days when the clouds were large, massive and slow moving over the marsh. In my mind's picture, those long shadows drifted across the wide marsh and over my favorite island.
"Click" my mental camera snapped the image. But, then I had to make that happen on canvas. Working on the piece, I took "Artist's license" editing out other islands and moved them far off in the distance. My goal was to give this one ancient island, left millions of years ago by the gigantic melting glaciers, the central part in the on-going timeless drama of its quiet, graceful life.
I hope you like it. I would love to know your thoughts. It is available for purchase. BTW, the painting changes as the sun changes through out the day. If you have an interest, please contact me for its price: dorseydesign@comcast.net
